5 Helpful Tips for Cleaning a Leather Backpack

Leather backpacks, especially ones that are top-quality, aren’t cheap. That means that the care and cleaning methods shouldn’t be cheaply done, either. Proper maintenance not only wards off stains, but it can also prevent potential damages caused by environmental conditions.

Now, many of today’s leather backpack brands come with specific cleaning and maintenance directions. But if you happen to own one that doesn’t have these instructions we have some tips that can help you out.

Leather backpacks

Tip #1: Know the type of leather you’re dealing with

There are seven different types of leather: full-grain, corrected leather, split leather, suede, bi-cast leather, patent leather, and bonded leather. Each one differs in the quality of material. Finished leather, for example, comes with a protective layer coating. On the other hand, untreated leather like suede doesn’t have the same luxury.

That means the cleaning method will also vary. Saddle soaps are OK for finished leather, while any kind of soap – even milder ones – are a no-no for untreated leathers that are more sensitive.

Unless your bag comes with cleaning instructions, do some research before beginning the cleaning process.

Tip #2: Take immediate action

So you’ve spilled some coffee on your brand new white leather backpack. Your next course of action should be to clean it right away. It wouldn’t be wise to allow the stain to settle as it could be more difficult to deal with.

When cleaning off liquid stains, all you need is a soft cloth dampened by warm water. Soap isn’t recommended as it can contain harsh ingredients that could damage the surface. Leather cleaners are also helpful.

Another pro tip: if you’re using a cleaning solution in a spray bottle, spray it onto the cloth first and not directly onto the bag. Also, avoid rubbing too much as it can leave water stains on the leather, and that’s never good.

Tip #3: Keep your leather bags grime-free

If you want to maintain your bag’s brand new look, you can start by keeping it free from dirt and grime. A way to protect the material is to give your leather a regular wiping to help keep its shine. Applying a few sprays of waterproofing solution and the occasional wax can also help.

Tip #4: Don’t forget to moisturize

Cleaning agents and water both zap out the moisture from the leather, but you’ll need a little bit of it for proper maintenance. Make it a post-cleaning ritual to apply some leather condition for moisturization.

All you need for this is some leather conditioner and either a brush, microfiber cloth, or sponge. Gently rub the conditioner onto the leather in a circular motion, until the entire surface is covered.

Tip #5: Consider professional assistance

Now, if you’re dealing with harder-to-remove stains like make-up or ink, you may need to have it cleaned by a professional. You can try to do some spot cleaning first to see if it can be removed. If not, have it dry cleaned. Don’t try to rub too hard because it can damage the surface of the bag.
